8.3 Proactive vs. Reactive - ATS Standard

Updated on

NOTE: Proactive % measurement is influenced by the use of the proactive override button.  Reference the PM/PdM % to view task types in their original classification.

Reactive work: Maintenance work that breaks into the weekly schedule. (SMRP Best Practices 4th Edition Section 5.4.1)

Proactive work: Maintenance work that is completed in order to avoid failures or to identify defects that could lead to failures. It includes routine preventive and predictive maintenance activities and work tasks identified from these defects. (SMRP Best Practices 4th Edition Section 5.4.2)

Other work: Maintenance work that cannot be classified as either reactive or proactive. Other work includes training, meetings, projects, continuous improvement, events, calibration, and health assessments.

The proactive vs reactive measurement is calculated using the following formulas:

The Trend Chart displays the Proactive percentage along with the total labor hours for Proactive, Reactive, and Other work.

The Pareto chart displays the top assets with the most reactive labor hours over the previous 6-month period. Assets listed on the Pareto chart may be good candidates to perform additional analysis to review the types of failures and to determine if we are performing the right proactive maintenance activities and predictive maintenance activities at the optimum frequencies.

This standard chart will also have a section for action items. This section will identify the actions, owners, and due dates for action plans that will be executed to improve performance. The development of the action item section should be coordinated by the P/S and jointly developed by the Team Leads, Site Supervisors, and the Site Manager. The Site Manager is ultimately responsible for the completion, quality, and conformance to the action items identified.
