9.1 Overview of Work Execution Management (WEM) Scheduling Concepts

Updated on

Before getting into how eFACTORYPRO handles weekly scheduling, we want to refresh you on some of the key concepts from the FMS Operating System's Work Execution Management Module (WEM) .

If you want more information on the WEM, you can go to the Operating System SharePoint and see the resources there, or you can reach out to your Regional Planner Scheduler and ask them to enroll you in the WEM training.

It is important that you understand the theory and concepts behind Weekly Scheduling, because EFP is just a tool to help you get that done. If you do not follow the process with a WEM mindset, you will not achieve the desired results.

Some basic concepts to begin.

The Planner/Scheduler is responsible for maintaining ready backlogs that support fully loaded weekly schedules.  S/he creates a weekly schedule for upcoming week that is fully loaded to 100% of available crew labor hours.  Additional responsibilities include facilitating the weekly scheduling meeting and creating and managing reusable job plans.

1. It is a proven best practice that you should provide the entire maintenance team with a batch of  prioritized, planned work as a goal for the next week.

2. The team should be scheduled to 100% of the hours they will be onsite.

3. The objective is NOT to complete 100% of the schedule.  Realistically teams usually complete anywhere from 40-90% of the work that is scheduled.

4. However, a team that is scheduled to 100% of their hours for the following week WILL complete MORE work than those who are not fully scheduled.  The reason why is because the schedule provides a sense of mission, direction and ownership that maximizes productivity.

5. The criteria the Planner/Scheduler will follow (in order of priority) when building the preliminary 7 Day schedule will be as follows:

5.1. High priority planned tasks that are critical to plant safety, environmental or performance

5.2. PM/PdM tasks

5.3. Follow-up (FM) tasks

5.4. Carryover Tasks

5.5. Customer request tasks

5.6. Engineering & new equipment support

5.7. Cosmetic & nice to have work

There are several available views from the Weekly Scheduling Screen.

The default view is "Ready Backlog".  This returns all tasks that are "In Planning" / "Ready for Execution" status and reason.

  • Everything on this view should have already met all the planning criteria:  more than one step, a duration, a skillset, etc.
  • You will find Tasks that have gone through the Planning Wizard, as well as PM and PdM tasks which generate in the In Planning/Ready for Scheduling status.

By clicking on the drop down, you can access the other views:  To Be Scheduled, To Be Scheduled - Overdue, Scheduled - Ready for Execution, and Scheduled - Waiting on Materials.

The To Be Scheduled Views need to be processed through the Period Capacity Screen.

The Scheduled views will show tasks that have been scheduled, and potentially even scheduled to daily capacities, but have not moved into In Progress or beyond.

Please note:  If a Task is scheduled to be completed in a week, it will be returned to the schedule board if it is not completed AND reviewed within that scheduling period.
